What Babbel actually costs, line by line
How much does Babbel cost? On Babbel's own web checkout, read 23 September 2026: $8.95 a month billed as $107.40 for the annual plan, $13.45 a month billed as $80.70 for six months, and a $299.99 one-time Lifetime. The US App Store charges different amounts for the same app — every line below says which storefront it came from.
The fight card
Per-month equivalents at the prices we read on 23 September 2026 — annual billed $107.40 up front, six-month billed $80.70, one month from the US App Store.
Babbel doesn't have one price — it has a grid: plan length times storefront times whether a sale is running (one usually is). This page pins the grid down with dated figures from Babbel's own pages and its US App Store listing, then covers the terms that actually bite: what renews, what's refundable, and what the “free” version really includes. Some links here are referral links, marked sponsored; the numbers came first.
Babbel's plans at the web checkout
Read from Babbel's own checkout (sponsored link) on 23 September 2026: the annual plan is $8.95 a month, billed as $107.40 for the year up front; the six-month plan is $13.45 a month, billed as $80.70 per six months; and Lifetime is $299.99, once, covering all of Babbel's languages. One- and three-month plans exist too, but Babbel's readable pages don't print their web prices — the checkout shows them after you pick a language, so we don't quote them here.
Two mechanics matter more than the headline number. First, “per month” is marketing arithmetic — every subscription bills its full term in advance, so the annual plan is a $107.40 charge on day one, not twelve small ones. Second, every plan except Lifetime auto-renews for the same term until you cancel; Babbel's terms also say a free trial “will automatically convert to Paid Services” when it ends. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you buy.

The same app, priced by the App Store
Buy inside the iOS app instead and the numbers change: on the US App Store listing read the same day, one month of a single language is $17.99, three months are $45.99, a 12-month single-language plan is $89.99, and the 12-month all-languages plan is $107.99 — 59 cents more than the web annual, for less flexibility on refunds (Apple's rules apply, not Babbel's).
The practical rule: compare both checkouts before paying, and prefer the web one when they're close — Babbel's own 14-day withdrawal right applies to purchases made directly from Babbel, while app-store purchases are explicitly carved out of that clause in its terms. The app works the same wherever you bought the subscription.
Sharing it: the Group Plan
Babbel's Group Plan covers up to six learners and cost $30.95 for one month or $185.70 for twelve on Babbel's US page, read 23 September 2026 — about $15.48 a month for the year. Babbel's own framing is that the group price runs “typically around 50 percent more than an individual plan”, which means it beats individual annuals as soon as two people genuinely use it: $185.70 split two ways is $92.85 each against $107.40 alone. Prices vary by region and taxes, per Babbel's page.
What about Babbel Live?
Babbel also sells Babbel Live, a separate product with real teachers in small online classes, priced apart from the app plans above; its readable US pages don't print a standing Live price, so we don't quote one. Two honest notes: live classes are a different purchase decision from a self-study app (a tutor-versus-app question, not a Babbel-versus-Duolingo one), and if the app subscription is what you're pricing, nothing in the plans above includes Live time.

Is any of it free?
Partly, and honestly not much: the first lesson of a course is free, and registering costs nothing — but a subscription is required for full courses. There's no permanent free tier the way Duolingo offers one; if a genuinely free app is the requirement, Duolingo is the answer and it pays us nothing to say so. The full trial-and-refund fine print is in the is Babbel free breakdown.
How the bill compares with the rivals
For scale: Babbel's $107.40 web annual sits under Rosetta Stone's $159 yearly and far under either app's monthly route, while Duolingo's free tier stays at $0 with ads and energy limits. That gap is the entire financial half of the Duolingo vs Babbel vs Rosetta Stone decision; the teaching half is scored there too. On price alone, Babbel is the cheapest serious paid option of the big three at the prices we read — and still infinitely more expensive than the free app if you were never going to open it after February.
The sale pattern (and why the list price is half-fiction)
Babbel's own pages say it “frequently offers discounts, especially for new users or during seasonal sales” — our plain-English translation: the list price is what you pay for buying on the wrong week. If you're not in a hurry, wait for a promotion; they recur across the year. We don't publish coupon codes — codes from third-party pages are frequently stale or unauthorized, and the sales land on Babbel's own checkout anyway, where the current price is always the true one.
So which plan should you buy?
- Testing the water — don't buy yet: take the free first lesson, or run Duolingo free for two weeks to prove the habit.
- Committed for a season — the six-month plan at $80.70 billed once; cheaper per month than going monthly, less exposure than a year.
- Committed for real — the annual plan at $107.40 (sponsored link); it's the price the whole three-way matchup uses for Babbel's corner.
- Two or more learners in one household — the Group Plan at $185.70/yr starts winning at two active users.
- Allergic to renewals — Lifetime at $299.99, which pays for itself against annuals in under three years — the lifetime math is scored separately.
Whatever you pick, the checkout you reach today outranks this page — Babbel repriced nothing we could see this week, but this category reprices constantly, which is why every figure above carries its read date. If a number here and the checkout disagree, trust the checkout and we'd genuinely like to hear about it.
